Mastodons Complete Sweep of Milwaukee With Ninth Inning Rally
4/10/2022 4:31:00 PM | Baseball
FRANKLIN, Wis. – The Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team won their fourth consecutive game thanks to a ninth inning rally at Milwaukee on Sunday (April 10) by the score of 7-6. It completed a three-game road series sweep of the Panthers.
Jack Lang's name was all over the box score on Sunday. He started the game with a solo home run in the first. Lang's second hit came at just the right time. He stepped in the box in the ninth with the 'Dons down 6-5 and Brian Erbe at second. Lang singled on a 3-2 pitch to score Erbe and knot the game. Lang then stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a balk. Lang then snagged a line drive in the bottom of the ninth for the final out of the game with the tying run on first.
Lang finished 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBIs and two walks.
The other big inning for the 'Dons came in the third. Purdue Fort Wayne scored four times, highlighted by a bases loaded three-RBI double by Cade Fitzpatrick.
The 'Dons led 5-0 after two and a half, but it was a 5-5 game by the end of the fifth. It stayed that way until Milwaukee put one across in the eighth. It looked like it might hold up as the game winning run, but that was until Erbe and Lang combined to put the 'Dons back up the next half inning.
Rex Stills started and went 3.0 innings. He allowed three runs (two earned). The Mastodon bullpen went to work the rest of the six innings, allowing three runs (one earned). Brian Skelton got the win, he is 1-0 after 1.2 innings. Braxton Wilson got the final out of the game for his first collegiate save.
Senior Alex Evenson also helped out for Purdue Fort Wayne, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
