Mastodons Win Fifth Straight With 9-5 Win at Northern Kentucky

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Purdue Fort Wayne broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh on their way to a 9-5 victory at Northern Kentucky on Thursday (April 14) afternoon. The Mastodons have now won five games in a row. The 'Dons had a season-high 17 hits in the game.
The 'Dons earned a solid outing from starter JD Deany. He moved to 2-1 on the season with the win. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out seven.
Rex Stills put up a zero in the seventh inning with two strikeouts out of the pen.
Justin Miller tossed the final two innings. The senior gave up one big hit, a three-run home run. However, he also recorded four strikeouts. Miller now has 167 strikeouts in his Mastodon career, third most all-time in program history. He passed Evan Miller (2015-16) and David Zachary (2002-05) on the career strikeout list. They had 165. Miller is a San Diego Padres draft pick currently in AAA.
The Mastodons struck out a season-high 13 Norse hitters, tied for seventh most in program history.
Ben Higgins led the way offensively for the Mastodons, going 4-for-5 in the game with his sixth home run of the season. He had three RBIs and two runs. Cade Fitzpatrick smacked his seventh home run of the season. Garett Lake also chipped in, going 2-for-5 for Purdue Fort Wayne with a key two-RBI double in the ninth inning to put the game away.
The 'Dons scored two in the first before NKU knotted it with single runs in the second and sixth innings. Purdue Fort Wayne went up for good with a four-run seventh. Jack Lang singled in Jarrett Bickel in the frame before Higgins and Fitzpatrick hit back-to-back home runs.
A three-run home run by NKU's John Odom in the eighth made it a 6-5 game, but the 'Dons scored three in the ninth.
