Purdue Fort Wayne Falls to Valparaiso 5-4 Despite Late Lead

VALPARAISO, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team took a 4-2 lead into the sixth inning, but the Valparaiso Beacons picked up a 5-4 win over the Mastodons on Tuesday (April 12).
Senior Lauren McConnell (1-4) started and took the loss in the circle for Purdue Fort Wayne (6-28).
Offensively, the Mastodons were paced by junior Epiphany Hang, who went 3-for-4 on the day with two doubles and two RBIs. Camryn Mosher compiled a noteworthy effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Alise Hale also contributed for Purdue Fort Wayne, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate, while adding a double.
The Mastodons got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Purdue Fort Wayne got an RBI single from Sonia Solis, scoring Hale from second base.
The Mastodons lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 2-1. Purdue Fort Wayne pushed two runs across on a two-run double from Hang that brought home Emma McMillan and Hale, which brought the Mastodons lead to 3-2.
Purdue Fort Wayne kept Valparaiso scoreless before expanding their lead to 4-2 the following inning. The Mastodons notched a run on Mosher's leadoff home run off freshman Cheyenne Nietz. The Mastodons were unable to hold the lead, as Valparaiso scored three times over the remaining three innings to grab the 5-4 win.
