Comeback Falls Short For Mastodon Softball Against Detroit Mercy

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - With the winning run on second base in the bottom of the seventh, the Purdue Fort Wayne softball team could not capitalize on the opportunity and fell to the Detroit Mercy Titans 3-2 on Friday (April 15) at the Purdue Fort Wayne Softball Field.
Senior Shaina Eyre (3-11) got the ball to start for Purdue Fort Wayne (6-29, 5-10) and took the loss. Lauren McConnell came out of the bullpen to throw five innings. She gave up just one run in her 67 pitches.
Taryn Jenkins led the way offensively for the Mastodons, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with an RBI. Thais Uyema provided some help at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sonia Solis went 1-for-2 for Purdue Fort Wayne with a hit and two walks.
Trailing 2-0, the Mastodons first put a run on the board in the second inning. Purdue Fort Wayne got an RBI single from Uyema, scoring Solis from third base.
The Titans expanded their lead to 3-1 before the Mastodons offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. Purdue Fort Wayne scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Jenkins, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Titans. The 'Dons had the bases juiced with Alise Moneypenny, Solis and Jenkins with two outs, but a fly out ended the contest.
