Strong Pitching Helps Baseball to Sweep at Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE – Both starting pitchers for the Mastodons on Saturday (April 9) went into the eighth inning to help Purdue Fort Wayne sweep Milwaukee 5-4 and 7-0 in the Horizon League doubleheader.
GAME 1 | Purdue Fort Wayne 5, Milwaukee 4
Purdue Fort Wayne took a 2-1 lead in the second inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 5-4 victory.
Mitchell Spencer (2-2) got the win for the 'Dons. The right-hander went 7.2 innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on nine hits, allowing no walks and striking out three. Justin Miller earned his second save in as many games. He threw the final 1.1 without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out three.
Jack Lang went 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and an RBI. Isaiah Hart finished 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Brian Erbe also chipped in two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a triple.
The Mastodons were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they scored a pair. The big hit was an RBI double from Lang.
The Mastodons built on their lead in the fourth inning. Purdue Fort Wayne scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Jarrett Bickel, which brought the Mastodons lead to 3-1.
Purdue Fort Wayne kept Milwaukee without a run before building their lead to 4-1 the following inning. The Mastodons added a run on Hart's two-out RBI double.
The Panthers gained ground, closing the gap to 4-3 until Purdue Fort Wayne added some insurance in the eighth. Senior Alex Evenson crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Mastodons on a groundout, bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of Purdue Fort Wayne.
Miller came in and put the game away.

Jacob Myer and JD Deany combined to toss a shutout. They teamed with catcher Dylan Stewart to earn the shutout.
Myer (2-4) started and picked up the win, going 7.1 shutout innings while giving up five hits, walking one, and striking out four. Deany was dealing out of the bullpen as well, going 1.2 shutout innings without allowing a hit, walking one and striking out one.
Fitzpatrick went 2-for-5 in the game with a double and four RBIs. He knocked in runs in the first and fifth innings. Brian Erbe knocked in two insurance runs on a single in the ninth. His hit scored Lang and Ben Higgins.
