‘Dons Secure Horizon League Championship Berth With Split at Wright State

DAYTON, Ohio – Purdue Fort Wayne will be playing in the 2022 Horizon League Baseball Championship after earning a split on Saturday (May 14) at Wright State. The Mastodons took down the first-place Raiders 5-4 in the opener and fell in the nightcap 17-3.
The 'Dons have a bye next week during the final week of league play. Purdue Fort Wayne finishes league play with a 13-15 record. It is the most league wins for the 'Dons since 2016.
The 2022 Horizon League Championship will be held May 25-28 at the top seed. Currently Wright State is at the top of the league standings.
GAME 1 | Purdue Fort Wayne 5, Wright State 4 (scheduled seven-inning game)
The 'Dons never trailed in the opener after Jarrett Bickel opened the game with a home run. Wright State knotted it up with a single run in the fourth.
The big hit of the game came in the fifth. Ben Higgins came to the plate with the bases loaded. He took a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam. It put the 'Dons up 5-1.
Wright State responded with two solo home runs in the fifth to make it 5-3. JD Deany bounced back to work a scoreless sixth to keep the score at 5-3. Deany walked the first batter he faced in the seventh. Brian Skelton came in from the pen and earned a double play from the first batter he saw. Wright State's Andrew Patrick followed with the Raiders' third solo home run of the game, but it wasn't enough as Skelton finished off the game for his first career save.
Deany earned the win. He is 5-2. He gave up three runs on six hits.
Bickel added two walks to his performance in game one. Cade Nelis added a double.
GAME NOTES
» The win over Wright State gave the 'Dons a victory over every team in the league this season.
» The Mastodons' postseason berth is their first since 2016.
» Neither Deany nor Skelton recorded a strikeout. They combined to earn six ground balls and 12 fly balls.
» It is the first time the Mastodon pitching staff didn't record a strikeout in a game since May 8, 2010 at Southern Utah.
» It is the first time the 'Dons didn't record a strikeout in a game they won since April 23, 2010 when the 'Dons defeated North Dakota State 2-1.

Cade Fitzpatrick went 2-for-2 with a triple and a run batted in for the 'Dons. Karter Hann knocked in a run with a double in the seventh.
Jacob Myer (2-6) started and took the loss after Wright State scored four times in the first inning.
Wright State scored multiple runs in the first, second, seventh and eighth innings. The 'Dons cut it to a 9-3 deficit in the seventh, only to see Wright State score eight consecutive runs. Wright State recorded 19 hits.
