
Mastodons Open Postseason Play With Youngstown State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team will make their first appearance in a league postseason tournament since 2016 on Wednesday (May 25) when the Mastodons open the 2022 Horizon League Championship. The 'Dons will play Youngstown State in a noon start in an elimination contest. The 'Dons are the No. 4 seed. The Penguins are No. 5.

Scouting the Penguins: Youngstown State is led by Horizon League Pitcher of the Year Matt Brosky. The junior posted a league-best 2.91 ERA and led the league with 89.2 innings pitched. Braeden O'Shaughnessy earned All-League First Team honors at second. He hit .366 on the year with seven home runs.
A Win And...: Should the 'Dons win on Wednesday over the Penguins, they would advance to double elimination play on Thursday against either Wright State or Oakland.
All-League: Jack Lang and Cade Fitzpatrick were named to the 2022 All-Horizon League Second Team. Rex Stills was selected to the All-Freshman Team.
Everyday Jack: Jack Lang has played in 203 career games. He is only the third Mastodon to reach the 200 mark. His 203 total ranks second in program history. The program leader in games played is Shane Trevino (2012-16) with 234.
Jarrett Bickel is Smooth at Short: In league play this season, Jarrett Bickel finished with 70 assists and 48 putouts on 123 chances with only five errors at short. He turned 14 double plays.
EZ 4 JD: Only once in league play did JD Deany have a start allowing more than three earned runs. He picked up his first career complete game in game one at UIC on May 8, 2022. He went the distance in the seven inning contest, allowing two runs for the 'Dons to win 3-2.

POTW X2:Jacob Myer was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on April 12 after not allowing any runs in 8.2 innings. He got the win against Michigan and Milwaukee. On April 19 Ben Higgins was named the Horizon League Batter of the Week. He went 9-of-13 (.692 batting average) with a .750 on-base percentage, 1.154 slugging percentage and a 1.904 OPS. He had two home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored.
Lucky 13: The Mastodons' 13 league wins are their most since the 2016 team won 14 games in the Summit League.
Miller Time: Justin Miller owns 180 strikeouts, second most in program history. He has one year of eligibility remaining. Jason Horvath owns the program record with 210 from 2001-04.
