Softball Goes to Extra Innings With Evansville in Game Two

EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped a pair of games on Saturday (Feb. 25) to St. Thomas and Evansville, but the Mastodons went to eight innings with the Purple Aces in the nightcap.
GAME 1: St. Thomas 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 2
Purdue Fort Wayne dropped the opening game to St. Thomas 5-2.
Through two innings, it was still a one-run contest. Taryn Jenkins doubled to score Bailey Manos in the first inning, then Brooke Wintlend scored in the second after getting a double of her own. She scored while the Tommies were trying to catch another Mastodon stealing.
St. Thomas scored four runs in the first three innings, yielding enough for the win.
Gracie Brinkerhoff fell to 1-3 with the loss. Alyson Quinlan tossed 5.1 innings of relief ball, turning away five Tommies. Ella Cook got the win after throwing the whole game.
St. Thomas improved to 5-8.
GAME 2: Evansville 5, Purdue Fort Wayne 4
The Mastodons went toe-to-toe with the 12-1 Purple Aces, pushing the game into extra innings.
Alanah Jones was a large reason why the Mastodons were even with Evansville after seven innings. She had 10 strikeouts, which is the most of her freshman season. She tossed all 7.1 innings, but took the loss to fall to 3-4.
Evansville had three pitchers split the duties, with Megan Brenton picking up the win in 3.0 innings pitched.
The Mastodons went up 2-0 in the first. Wintlend doubled to bring Grace Hollopeter home, then Sonia Solis singled to score Wintlend.
After Evansville evened the score in the fourth, Hollopeter sent Tori Countryman across home plate by singling up the middle.
In extras, Warne brought home Manos after she was placed on second. Evansville got the game-winning run in walk-off fashion; a two-run home run to left center was the end of the game.
Purdue Fort Wayne fell to 4-11, while Evansville improved to 12-1.
The final game of the 2023 Aces Home Tournament #2 will be a Purdue Fort Wayne/St. Thomas rematch at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday (Feb. 26).
