Mastodons Get a Win in Evansville Over Austin Peay

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team split a doubleheader with Austin Peay on Saturday (March 11).
Game One – Purdue Fort Wayne 5, Austin Peay 3 (8 innings)
In a game scheduled to go seven innings, the two clubs needed one more frame to decide a winner.
The Mastodons entered the seventh down a run. Eli Tencza opened the frame with a single. He advanced to second on a Dylan Stewart sacrifice bunt. Drew Dillon came in for Stewart as a pinch runner and moved to third on a groundout. Austin Peay was an out away from winning when the hot-hitting Braedon Blackford came to the plate. He already had a homer to his name in the contest so the Governors decided to walk Blackford. Ben Higgins followed Blackford and took the first pitch he saw to right field for a game-tying single.
Kevin Fee threw a 1-2-3 seventh to push the game to extras. In the eighth inning, Cade Nelis opened the inning with a single and scored on a bases loaded hit by pitch. The 'Dons added another insurance run in the inning.
Fee allowed only a walk in the eighth to clinch the victory. Fee is now 1-0 after not allowing a hit in three innings. Mastodon starter Jacob Myer earned a no-decision after allowing three runs in 5.0 innings.
Higgins, Tencza, Nelis and Jacob Walker each had two hits in the game.
Game Two – Austin Peay 4, Purdue Fort Wayne 2
Blackford knocked in a pair on a single in the third inning to give the 'Dons their only lead of the game at 2-1. Austin Peay took the lead back for good in the bottom of the third thanks to three runs. It stayed 4-2 the rest of the way. The 'Dons put runners on first and second with one out in the sixth but couldn't get them home.
Grant Thoroman had two hits for the 'Dons.
Brody Fine started and suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) in 2.2 innings. Mac Ayres didn't allow a hit 3.1 innings of work from the pen.
Jacob Kush (1-1) went 6.0 innings for the win for Austin Peay. Kyle Magrans received the save.
The Governors are now 6-10. The 'Dons are 3-14 and travel to Ball State on Tuesday.
