BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team picked up a win over Green Bay, but fell to Indiana on the final day of the Hoosier Classic (Sunday, March 5).
GAME 1 - Purdue Fort Wayne 2, Green Bay 1
The Mastodons got a taste of the Horizon League before the league season starts in a few weeks. Sunday's game against Green Bay did not count as a league game.
Alyson Quinlan held the Phoenix to just one hit in the first three innings, which allowed the Mastodons to break the tie first. The 'Dons had a two-run third after Brayden Lickey reached second after the Phoenix right fielder dropped a fly ball. Grace Hollopeter singled, then advanced to second on the throw from center field. Then Taylor Warne slapped to left center to bring home Lickey and Hollopeter.
The two runs the Mastodons scored were enough to get the win, as Green Bay only threatened, but never took the lead. A solo home run to lead off the fifth was the only scoring done and the 'Dons stranded five Green Bay runners the rest of the way.
Quinlan pitched the whole game to pick up the win. She had five strikeouts to move to pick up the first win of her career.
GAME 2 - Indiana 10, Purdue Fort Wayne 1
Purdue Fort Wayne took a lead in the first inning, but its lead was short-lived. Hollopeter had a single then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single from Taryn Jenkins.
Indiana responded with a three-run home run in the bottom of the frame which proved to be the difference. The Hoosiers added seven runs in the third.
Alanah Jones took the loss to fall to 3-7. Kennedy Peckinpaugh tossed an inning of scoreless ball in relief. Heather Johnson got the win for Indiana to improve to 3-6.
Purdue Fort Wayne goes to 5-15 with the split on Sunday. Indiana goes back to .500 at 8-8. The Mastodons have nine days until their next contest, which will be the Mastodons' home opener against Butler.
