Braedon Blackford Sets Single-Season RBI Record on Senior Day

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Senior Braedon Blackford drove in six runs and was one of 10 Mastodons honored on Saturday (May 13) during Senior Day for the Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team. The 'Dons fell to Oakland 12-9 in the 2023 home finale for Purdue Fort Wayne.

Blackford entered the game with 50 runs batted in. He finished with six RBIs to bring his season total to 56, passing Jared Davis' 54 in 2007 for the record.

Blackford had a double with the bases loaded in the sixth and the 'Dons trailing 6-3. His hit scored all three and tied the score. It was his fourth RBI of the game to tie the record. He added another RBI in the eighth on a grounder to score Jacob Walker. Blackford added his sixth in the ninth inning. Cade Nelis was on second and with Oakland in a shift to the right side, Nelis was cruising into third as Blackford laid a bunt down toward third. With the area vacated, Blackford easily took first and Nelis scooted home.

Blackford finished with three hits. Jarrett Bickel, Dylan Stewart and Walker each had two hits in the game.

Christian Stelling got the win in relief for Oakland. He is 3-4. Justin Miller took the loss. He is 0-1. Brandon Heidal drove in three runs for Oakland. Reggie Bussey had two hits, two walks and two runs scored.

JD Deany, Isaiah Hart, Mike Madura, Jacob Myer, Brendan Reid, Nelis, Miller, Blackford, Stewart and Bickel were honored prior to the game during Senior Day festivities.

The 'Dons are now 10-41 (6-21 Horizon League). Oakland improves to 25-27 (16-11 Horizon League). The 'Dons are at Toledo in non-league play on Tuesday.
