Phoenix Outlast ‘Dons in Five

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Purdue Fort Wayne traveled to Green Bay on Friday (Sept. 22) looking for their first Horizon League win of the season. In the end, the Phoenix topped the Mastodons 3-2 (20-25, 25-19, 15-25, 25-23, 15-10) at the Kress Center.
The 'Dons were scoring points from the service line all night. They finished the match with 13 aces to only seven errors. The 13 aces are the most for the 'Dons since recording 14 vs. Old Dominion on Sept. 11, 2021.
LonDynn Betts led the 'Dons with a career-high five aces. She also totaled a match-high 23 digs.
The Mastodons out-hit the Phoenix .500 to .385 in the first to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Green Bay rallied, limiting the 'Dons to a .057 attack percentage in the second set. The third saw the 'Dons record five aces and ground the Phoenix offense by limiting them to a -.062 attack percentage. The 'Dons closed the set on a 10-2 run with the Phoenix using both of their time outs trying to halt the push.
The Mastodons had a chance to close out the match in the fourth. They rallied from a 10-6 hole to go up 21-16 on a Taya Haffner ace. Green Bay scored nine of the next 11 points to take the set. They carried that momentum into the fifth.
Panna Ratkai had a team-high 17 kills. Ashby Willis added 15 kills. They both recorded seven digs. Nicole Jones finished a double-double of 23 assists and 10 digs.
Tiffany Paalman hit .429 with 18 kills for the Phoenix. They had five student-athletes finish with double-digit digs.
Green Bay improves to 3-10 (1-0 Horizon League). The 'Dons are now 5-9 (0-2 Horizon League). The 'Dons travel south on Interstate 43 to Milwaukee for a battle with the Panthers on Saturday.
