2/28/2024 9:09:00 PM | Women's Basketball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball nearly erased a 20-point deficit to Horizon League-leading Green Bay on Wednesday (Feb. 28), but came up just short and ultimately fell 70-61.
Prior to the game, Amellia Bromenschenkel was presented with a game ball, recognizing her joining the 1,000-point club in the Mastodons' last outing.
Renna Schwieterman led the Mastodons with 16 points, her most against a Division I opponent this season. She shot 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. She was one of three Mastodons with six rebounds as Shayla Sellers and Bromenschenkel pulled down six boards as well. Bromenschenkel was the other Mastodon in double figures with 13 points.
The 'Dons outshot Green Bay 11-to-7 from 3-point range in the game with eight in the second half compared to Green Bay's two after the break. Schwieterman led the team with four triples while Sellers hit three in the second half.
Green Bay led 24-7 after the first quarter thanks to a 60 percent effort from the floor. Schwieterman and Bromenschenkel each had five points in a second quarter that only had 25 points combined by the two sides.
The 'Dons cut the lead down to 10 in the third quarter. Audra Emmerson led the team with six points in the third, but it was Sydney Graber who flipped the momentum for the Mastodons. Graber collected a deflected pass and drained a three as time expired. It was Graber's second 3-pointer in her career and first since the 2020-21 season. The Mastodons jumped out to a 9-4 run to start the fourth. The 'Dons came within four points on several occasions, the first of which came after Sellers hit a triple.
It was a four-point game with two minutes left and the Mastodons had three 3-pointers that could have swung the score to the Mastodons' favor, but all rimmed out. From there, Green Bay shot free throws to extend the lead out to its final line of nine.
The Mastodons fall to 19-11 and 12-7 in the Horizon League while maintaining third place with one game remaining. Top-ranked Green Bay improves to 27-4 and 18-2 in league play. The 'Dons host Youngstown State at 3 p.m. on Saturday (Mar. 2) in their regular season finale. It will be a Senior Day doubleheader with the men's program, who will play Robert Morris at 7 p.m.
