'Dons Drop a Pair at Maryland Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team dropped a pair of non-league games on Friday (March 15) to Bryant and Maryland.
GAME 1: Bryant 12, Purdue Fort Wayne 3
Despite the Mastodons cutting the lead in half the sixth inning, Bryant extended its lead in the seventh to take the win.
The Bulldogs scored two in the fourth and four in the fifth. This included a two-run homer in the fifth.
The Mastodons started a comeback in the sixth. Gwen McMenemy got on base thanks to an error by the Bulldogs, the Bailey Manos walked. Grace Hollopeter had a two-strike double to bring home McMenemy, then Aglaia Rudd grounded out and brought Manos home. After Rudd's RBI, Epiphany Hang singled up the middle to score Hollopeter.
Bryant had a six-run seventh inning to put a comeback out of reach.
Six different Mastodons had a hit. Hollopeter and Brooke Lickey each had a double.
Alanah Jones threw 4.2 innings and took the loss. Kayla Roberts threw 2.1 in relief. Caroline Paolantonio threw 5.1 innings and got the victory for Bryant.
Bryant improved to 9-6.
GAME 2: Maryland 8, Purdue Fort Wayne 0
Maryland's Courtney Wyche retired 15 of the 18 batters she faced as the 'Dons fell to the Terrapins 8-0.
Epiphany Hang broke up the no-hitter with a single in fourth inning. Tori Countryman also reached base in the second inning on a walk.
Maryland's go-ahead run came in the first, a solo shot to center. From there, the Terrapins tacked on two in the third and five in the fourth.
Gracie Brinkerhoff threw four innings and got the loss. Wyche pitched five innings and got the win for Maryland.
Maryland improves to 10-13 while Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 4-16. The Mastodons will play Lafayette and Fairfield on Saturday (March 16) at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
