FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team had the winning run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Youngstown State left Fort Wayne with a 3-2 win over the Mastodons.
McKenna Minton doubled down the line to start the final stand, then Bailey Manos and Grace Hollopeter singled to load the bases. Epiphany Hang stepped up with two outs and singled to bring home Minton. From there though, the Penguins got the final out they needed to sneak away with the win.
Aglaia Rudd had a single in the fifth inning as the YSU shortstop lost the ball in the sun. Manos came flying around third base to score the first run of the day for the 'Dons.
YSU scored first in the fourth with a solo home run, then again in the fifth on an error. The Penguins scored their eventual game-winning run in the seventh with a single.
Manos and Hollopeter had three hits each. Rudd and Hang had two each. The 'Dons had 12 hits, marking the eighth game with double-digit hits this season.
Alanah Jones threw all 7.0 innings and struck out four Penguins, but fell to 2-8. YSU's Sophie Howell got the win after pitching her second complete game in as many days.
Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 5-20 and 0-3 in the Horizon League. Youngstown State improves to 17-10, 6-0. The Mastodons will hit the road on Tuesday (March 26) to visit Akron.
