Softball Takes Series From IUPUI With 6-2 Win

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team picked up a series victory over IUPUI on Sunday (April 14), topping the Jaguars 6-3 in the final game of the weekend.
It was a big first inning that set the Mastodons up for the win. The 'Dons plated three after IUPUI went up 1-0 and never trailed again. The 'Dons loaded the bases with a walk and a pair of singles, then Tori Countryman brought Bailey Manos home to tie the game. From there, McKenna Minton singled to score one and Brooke Lickey hit a sacrifice fly to score another. The game was never closer than the 3-1 margin after the opening frame.
An inning later, Grace Hollopeter hit a solo shot over the left field wall to extend the Mastodon lead. IUPUI answered with a run in the fifth thanks to three singles in a row, but Aglaia Rudd slammed the door shut on a potential comeback. In the bottom of the fifth, Manos singled to left field, then Rudd smacked a long ball over the left field fence to make it a 6-2 lead. Rudd was the Mastodons' best player this week, as she hit .550 and slugged .800 with six RBIs in the six Horizon League games.
Alanah Jones tossed all seven innings after throwing just under 200 pitches the day before. She totaled 336 pitches in two wins this weekend. She improved to 5-12. Alexa Holman fell to 6-14 after giving up all six runs in 5.0 innings.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 9-28 and 4-11 in the Horizon League after the series win. IUPUI falls to 10-30, 6-9. The Mastodons will step out of league play for a quick visit to Akron on Tuesday (April 16).
