DETROIT - Purdue Fort Wayne took a series sweep from Detroit Mercy on Saturday (April 20) behind the bat of Brooke Wintlend, who hit three home runs in the 3-2 and 13-5 wins.
GAME 1: Purdue Fort Wayne 3, Detroit Mercy 2
The first game of the doubleheader was won in the sixth inning when Wintlend hit a 3-run home run for the go-ahead run. Gwen McMenemy singled on a bunt then Bailey Manos singled to third base to set up Wintlend's three-run shot.
Wintlend's homer put the 'Dons up 3-1, as the Titans had tallied one in the first on a wild pitch.
Detroit Mercy got a home run of its own in the bottom of the sixth, but it was a solo variety, keeping the 'Dons up one.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Titans had the tying run on second and the winning run at the plate, but Gracie Brinkerhoff kept the batter looking for the final out of the contest. Brinkerhoff got the victory in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out three Titans. Jordan Kavanagh was credited with the loss.
GAME 2: Purdue Fort Wayne 13, Detroit Mercy 5
Purdue Fort Wayne won game two in a slugfest, capitalizing on five home runs. Detroit Mercy had two of its own in the 18-run affair.
For the third time in the last week, Grace Hollopeter hit a solo home run on the first at bat of the game. Detroit Mercy answered with a two-run shot in the first, but Purdue Fort Wayne blew the game open from there.
The Mastodons had a six-run second inning, seeing home runs from Brooke Lickey and Wintlend. The 'Dons had five hits in the frame and saw all nine players take the plate.
The Titans cut into the lead in the fourth with a three-run homer, but the 'Dons answered back with two more runs in the fifth. These runs were more routine: an RBI ground out from Epiphany Hang and an RBI single from Gwen McMenemy.
In the sixth, the Mastodons reached double-digits with another home run from Hollopeter, once again in the first at bat of the inning. This time though, she did so on the first pitch dealt. Later on, Wintlend knocked in a three-run shot to left center and in the range of ending the game early.
In relief, Brinkerhoff dealt a pitch in the final at bat that led to a double play at first base. Kayla Roberts got her second win of the season in 4.2 innings pitched. She struck out two. Detroit Mercy's Olivia Warrington took the loss in 2.2 innings.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 12-29, 7-11 in the Horizon League. Detroit Mercy falls to 3-33, 2-13. The Mastodons are back on the field on Friday (April 26) when they visit Green Bay.
