Sutherlin’s Walk-Off Home Run And Pitching Key to DH Sweep

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A walk-off home run and solid pitching helped the Purdue Fort Wayne baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of first-place Northern Kentucky on Saturday (April 6). The Mastodons won game one 4-3 in 10 innings and game two 4-1. Northern Kentucky entered the game undefeated in league play. Mastodon starting pitchers on Saturday threw 12 shutout innings.
Game One – Mastodons 4, Northern Kentucky 3 (10 Innings)
Nick Sutherlin took an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall in the 10th inning to give the 'Dons the 4-3 victory.
The 'Dons entered the eighth inning up 1-0 but NKU scored three times to take a 3-1 lead. The 'Dons came right back, however, with a two-spot in the bottom half of the inning. Grant Thoroman knocked in the second run on a sacrifice fly before Justin Osterhouse used a clutch two-out double to score Camden Karczewski.
Purdue Fort Wayne nearly won it in the ninth but left the bases loaded. NKU put two on in the top of the 10th, but Kevin Fee earned a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Two pitches into the bottom half of the inning, Sutherlin ended it with a home run.
Mac Ayres got a no decision but was a big reason the 'Dons got the win. He threw six shutout innings with four hits and five strikeouts.
Sutherlin and Osterhouse each finished with two hits in the game.
Fee got the win and is now 4-0.
Game Two – Mastodons 4, Northern Kentucky 1
The nightcap was the Carter Sabol show. He allowed just one hit with nine strikeouts over six scoreless innings to get the win. He is 4-2.
NKU had the tying run on base in the ninth when Fee induced 6-3 double play to pick up his third save of the season.
The Mastodons used a few key hits for their offense in game two. Ben Higgins singled in Sutherlin in the fourth to put the 'Dons up 1-0. Thoroman singled in a pair in the fifth to make it a 3-0 game. Luke Miles singled in Higgins in the ninth for an insurance run.
Ben Gerl got the loss for NKU. He is 3-1.
The 'Dons improve to 12-18 (6-5 Horizon League. NKU is now 19-11 (9-2 Horizon League). The Mastodons will look for a series sweep on Sunday (April 6) in a 1 p.m. start.
