FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Nick Sutherlin and Grant Thoroman each collected three hits to help lead the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons past the Milwaukee Panthers 14-4 in eight innings on Saturday (May 4).
Mac Ayres (2-4) got the win for Purdue Fort Wayne. The right-hander went 6.2 innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out two.
In addition to his three hits, Thoroman had a double and three RBIs to lead the 'Dons. Sutherlin added a double, a walk and two RBI to his three-hit performance as well. Ben Higgins put together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and three RBIs.
The 'Dons were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Purdue Fort Wayne scored twice in the inning on run-scoring doubles from Thoroman and Sutherlin.
The Panthers then rallied to score two runs and take a 3-2 lead before the Mastodons got back on the board in the fifth. Purdue Fort Wayne scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-run single off the bat of Higgins, which brought the lead to 5-3.
Purdue Fort Wayne built their lead to 8-3 in the seventh inning thanks to a three spot.
It was an 8-4 game in the top of the eighth with one out and runners at the corners. Kevin Fee worked a double play to end the threat. A six-spot in the bottom half of the inning allowed the 'Dons to win by run-rule. Fee finished with a save in the game.
The 'Dons recorded five steals in the game.
Milwaukee was led offensively by junior Justin Hausser, who went 1-for-2 with a two-run home.
Luke Hansel took the loss for the Panthers after allowing five runs in six innings.
The 'Dons improve to 16-28, 9-13 Horizon League. Milwaukee falls to 14-29 (9-13 Horizon League). The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday (May 5) at Mastodon Field in an 11 a.m. start.
