Mastodons Travel to CSUN for Under Armour Challenge

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball program will travel to the Under Armour Challenge on January 17-18, hosted by CSUN.

Know Your Foes
Caleb Lipscomb and JP Candrian made their Mastodon debuts against Central State in the season opener. Candrian had 10 kills on .333 hitting, three digs, two aces and two blocks in his collegiate debut and Lipscomb had six kills on eight attempts, and added three digs, three blocks and two aces.
Fresh Faces
Head coach Donny Gleason, along with assistant coach Jake Gleason and graduate assistant coach Jon Diedrich, all enter their first year in their coaching positions for the Mastodons. Along with the coaching staff, Purdue Fort Wayne introduces five new players to the roster. Transfers Caleb Lipscomb (Thomas More) and Haven Wankerl (D'Youville) join a freshman class including: JP Candrian, Nick Gutka and Hunter Hopkins.
Last Time Out
Last week the 'Dons won the season opener against Central State (Jan. 10). Two Mastodons accrued double-doubles in the win, Andrej Polomac (11 digs and 36 assists) and Axel Melendez Watts (10 digs and 10 kills). Both players set career-high dig totals in the contest.

Purdue Fort Wayne will host LIU next week on Thursday, January 23 at the Gates Sports Center.

- CSUN retained their AVCA ranking of No. 15 in the nation, only dropping one set in their last three matches. The Matadors boast a .418 hitting percentage through the early portion of the season. Freshman Stilian Delibosov ranks fourth in the nation in hitting percentage (.571) and third in blocks per set (1.9). Jalen Phillips sits fourth in the nation in kills per set (4.7) and fifth in points per set (5.2). Senior Donovan Constable ranks fifth in the nation in assists per set with 11.2).
- UC San Diego sits at No. 17 in the nation, sweeping all four of their wins. The Tritons have beaten McKendree (RV) and No. 18 George Mason. The team has held opposing teams to an average of .107 hitting percentage. Grad student Bryce Dvorak sits third in the nation in aces per set with 1.083.
- CSUN has a 11-3 lead in the series history, with an eight game win stretch spanning from 1991-2006. Purdue Fort Wayne won the last contest in 2020 with a 3-0 sweep.
- Purdue Fort Wayne holds a 5-1 lead in the series history against UC San Diego, only dropping the first matchup in 1986.
