Mastodons Fall to No. 15 Matadors on the Road

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The Purdue Fort Wayne men's volleyball team lost their first road match of the season 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 27-25) at No. 15 CSUN on Friday (Jan. 17).
The first set was owned by CSUN, reaching up to a 10-point lead in the set. The Matadors held a 15-8 lead going into a Purdue Fort Wayne timeout, JP Candrian had three kills at the time. CSUN went on a 10-7 run from there to complete the set. Candrian ended the set with four kills, even with CSUN's Lorenzo Bertozzi for most kills in the match. The Matadors boasted a .417 hitting percentage after set one.
The Matadors controlled the following set as well, holding a lead for the entire second set. The 'Dons were down 15-10 going into the media, Logan Muir contributed three kills up to the break. Despite the Mastodons tallying a 3-0 run following the break, CSUN finished the set with a 10-7 run to finish off the second set 25-20. Both sides hit match-high percentages in the set, Purdue Fort Wayne with .381 and CSUN hitting .632. Jalen Phillips led all players with 12 kills after two.
The 'Dons added pressure in the third set, either holding the lead or staying within one up until the final point of the set. Purdue Fort Wayne led from 5-4 to 12-12, then again from 14-13 until 19-19. Going into the Matadors set point, the Mastodons held on to extend the set twice and eventually fell at 27-25.
Axel Melendez Watts reached double-digit kills in the competition (11). Andrej Polomac assisted on 24 kills during the contest. Jalen Phillips led all players with 19 kills while hitting .471. Donovan Constable finished the match with 33 assists.
Purdue Fort Wayne drops to 1-1 after the first road match. CSUN remains an undefeated 4-0 through the season. The Mastodons play No. 17 UC San Diego for the second game of the Under Armour Challenge on Saturday (Jan. 18).
