FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Becky Barrett had a career-high 27 digs, six assists, an ace and a kill on her birthday (Saturday, Oct. 4) to help Purdue Fort Wayne beat Green Bay 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 29-27, 25-16) on the Arnie Ball Court.
Barrett's day was highlighted at the 13-11 mark in the fourth set, when she dug out a Phoenix attack and her dig clipped the net and trickled over for a kill. It was the second kill of her career.
While Barrett led the way defensively for the Mastodons, Riley Rosneck was a huge threat offensively. She finished with a career-high 25 kills on an efficient .333 hitting percentage. She had seven of her kills in the first and fourth sets each, six in the second and five in the third. Trinity Rye and Mya Plemons were good second and third options, finishing with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Haiden Means dished out 48 assists and had 14 digs for a double-double.
There were 38 total ties and 22 lead changes in the four-set match.
Green Bay jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first frame, but the Mastodons chipped away, eventually putting together a 10-2 run to lead 18-15. Green Bay answered with a run of its own to go up 21-19, but Rosneck started a 6-1 run to win the set.
Like the first set, Green Bay and the Mastodons traded significant runs, but the Phoenix had a 3-1 push at the end to even the match.
In the third, the familiar runs appeared again, with a 7-1 stretch by the 'Dons being what got them to 20 first. From there though, Green Bay had a 6-1 run to go up 23-22. After that, both teams had at two set point chances, but the 'Dons had a 3-0 run with a kill then ace from Means, and a kill from Plemons to win the set.
After an 11-10 lead for GB in the fourth, the home team had a 5-0 run to take a lead they never yielded. It was later supplemented by a 9-2 finishing run.
Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 3-13, 1-4 Horizon League while Green Bay fell to 4-12, 3-2. The Mastodons will head to Oakland next weekend (Oct. 10-11) for a pair of Horizon League contests.
