PALM COAST, Fla. - After 18 holes of play at Purdue Fort Wayne's Hammock Beach Invitational, Hunar Mittal is leading the 42-player field after a 1-under opening round of 71 on Thursday (March 13).
Mittal had nothing worse than a bogey all day, of which she had four, but five birdies and nine pars helped her to the 1-under round. She had a bogey on holes two and six, but birdies on five and seven brought her back to an even front nine. Mittal bogeyed 10, but after two pars and a birdie on 13, she was even again. Her bogey on 14 put her back at +1, but she birdied her last two holes of the day to finish at 1-under. She is in first place with a three-stroke cushion between her and Indiana State's Rosalie DiNunzio.
Olivia Jang was also even on the front nine, but had just one hole with the same score as Mittal. Jang bogeyed one and three and birdied four and nine with a four-hole stretch of pars in between. On the back, Jang had four pars and five bogeys for an opening round of 77. She is in a tie for eighth place with 18 to go.
Natalie Papa shot an opening round of 78 thanks to a late push in her final three holes. She birdied 16 and 18 to go 1-under in her last three. On the front nine, she had four pars in a row early and a birdie on hole nine. Papa is alone in 13th place.
Lara Dommach shot 80 to slot into 16th place after the first round. She had 10 pars and eight bogeys.
Lillian Gottman had the only eagle in the field, netting a three on the 438-yard par-5 ninth. That was the highlight of her round of 83 after opening her day with five pars in her first six holes. Gottman is in a tie for 29th place.
Louise Ekesall (79, t-14th) and Lillie Cone (82, t-24th) played as individuals.
As a team, Purdue Fort Wayne shot 306 and is in second place in the seven-team field. The Mastodons trail only Indiana State's 300.
The final round of the Hammock Beach Invitational will be a tee time start at 7:40 a.m. on Friday (March 14).
