FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Grace Hollopeter went 6-for-6 with three home runs and nine RBIs to lead Purdue Fort Wayne softball to a pair of wins over Detroit Mercy on Thursday (March 27).
GAME 1: Purdue Fort Wayne 6, Detroit Mercy 5
The Mastodons did all of their damage in the first two innings and held off the Titans the rest of the way to pick up the win in game one. The first five batters reached the base paths and the first four scored. Bailey Manos walked, then advanced to second after a single from McKenna Minton. On the first pitch she saw, Hollopeter sent a bomb over the left field wall for her first home run of the day, pushing the 'Dons up 3-0 early. Aglaia Rudd singled then worked around to third after an Addison Zimpleman walk and Kennedy Peckinpaugh single. Brooke Lickey then had a sac fly on an 0-2 count to give the 'Dons a 4-0 lead.
In the Titans' next inning, Alanah Jones struck out three, stranding one on base. She finished with nine strikeouts, eventually earning the win. She moved to 5-9.
In the second, the 'Dons started back at the top of the order, getting a single from Bailey Manos to start. Two ABs later, Hollopeter ripped a pitch deep over the left field wall, right in line with the foul pole for her second homer of the day.
Detroit Mercy threatened later on, scoring three in the fifth and two in the seventh. The Titans had a two-run homer in the seventh, but Jones delivered from the circle, forcing a pop-up and striking out the final Titan with an 11-pitch at bat.
Detroit Mercy's Erin Flynn took the loss to fall to 2-3.
Hollopeter finished 4-for-4 with five RBIs. She had four of the Mastodons' 11 hits and five of the six RBIs.
GAME 2: Purdue Fort Wayne 9, Detroit Mercy 4
Detroit Mercy took a 2-0 lead, and even had a 4-3 lead in the fourth, but the heart of Purdue Fort Wayne's lineup torched the Titans in the first, fourth and sixth innings.
Rudd did her best Hollopeter impression in the first inning sending a long ball past left field to give the 'Dons a 3-2 lead. Detroit Mercy answered with a run in each of the second and fourth innings to retake the lead.
In the fourth, Peckinpaugh singled, Gwen McMenemy walked, then Manos doubled to score both. Two at bats later, Hollopeter doubled to bring Manos home.
Two innings later, Alexa Carter walked and Minton was hit by a pitch to bring up Hollopeter with two runners on. In her sixth AB of the day, Hollopeter did what she had been doing all day long, sending bombs over the left field wall. This put the 'Dons up 9-4, closing the book on the Titans' chances at a league win.
Gracie Brinkerhoff threw all 7.0 innings and struck out three batters to pick up the win. Jordan Kavanagh took the loss for Detroit Mercy.
The Mastodons improved to 7-16 and 3-2 in Horizon League play. Detroit Mercy falls to 5-16, 2-3. These two teams will meet again at 4 p.m. on Friday (March 28).
