VERO BEACH, Fla. - Lillian Gottman and Lara Dommach of the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team both earned their first top-five finishes of their career on Sunday (March 9) at the NKU Spring Fling.
Gottman (80-75-155) improved in round two, jumping up three spots thanks to her 3-over 75. She had a clean front nine with an even 36. She was bogey-free from 1-8, including a birdie on four. On the back nine, she had a stretch of six pars in a row.
Dommach (79-76-155) had nothing worse than a bogey in round two and found two birdies. She recorded her first birdie on six, which stabilized her for the rest of the round. After a +4 start in the first five holes, she was even the rest of the way. The freshman had nine pars and two birdies including seven bogey-free holes in a row on the back nine.
Hunar Mittal took 12th at the event after an 80-78-156. Like Dommach, Mittal also turned in a scorecard with nothing worse than a bogey on it. She started her day with a par, birdie, par, par stretch, then finished her day with five pars in her last seven holes.
Olivia Jang (84-75) and Natalie Papa (80-79) tied for 15th with 159s. After an up-and-down first round, Jang was steadier in round two. She started with three pars and a birdie before her first misstep of the day. Later on, she birdied holes eight and 12. Papa started with two pars, then worked through a stretch of six holes without a bogey. This included a birdie on hole six. She finished her day with a birdie on 16, then back-to-back pars on 17 and 18.
Louise Ekesall (81-81-162, 24th) and Lillie Cone (94-90-184, 50th) competed as individuals.
As a team, the Mastodons took third in the field with a 623, topping the only other Horizon League school, Northern Kentucky, by a whopping 32 shots. St. John's won the event with a 617.
The 'Dons will host the Hammock Beach Invitational in Palm Coast, Florida on March 13-14 next.
