Down 17-10 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, The Mastodons scored 11 runs to defeat the first-place Raiders. Eight Mastodons had a hit in the inning. It all started with a single by Owen Willard through the right side. When Willard came to the plate a second time, his infield single scored Sage Adams to tie the game at 17. Brooks Sailors loaded the bases with an infield single with one out, setting up Osterhouse's exclamation point of a day. The sophomore took an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall for an opposite field grand slam to give the Mastodons a 21-17 win.
But, what else did Osterhouse do on Thursday? He finished the day with four home runs, becoming the first Mastodon to ever hit four home runs in a game. He also had a school-record 17 total bases. Also.... thanks to throwing a scoreless top of the ninth inning, he got the win on the mound for his first collegiate pitching win in just his second career appearance.
Osterhouse had eight RBIs in the game, tying a DI era school record while stealing one base and being hit by a pitch. All told he was 5-of-6 on the day. The last Mastodon to knock in eight runs in a game was Brandon Soat vs. Murray State on Feb. 22, 2015.
Osterhouse is the fourth player in NCAA Division I this season to hit four home runs in a game. His 17 total bases tied for third most in a game this season in the nation.
As a team, the 'Dons totaled 25 hits. It matches the school record for hits in a game, accomplished last time on April 10, 2013 at Dayton. The Mastodons' 42 total bases in the game tied for second in program history, only to the 45 in the same game at Dayton. The five total home runs the 'Dons hit, Grant Sawa had the other, tied for second in DI era school history for dingers in a game.
Camden Karczewski also helped out the 'Dons, going 4-for-5 with a walk and an RBI. Brooks Sailors, Kevin Hall, Sawa and Willard each had three hits in the game. Sawa drove in four. Hall was on base five times with two walks to go with his three hits.
The 'Dons entered the fifth inning up 5-2 before Wright State scored eight runs in the inning. Wright State took a lead as large as 17-9 after the top of the eighth inning. But in the end the 'Dons scored in seven different innings on the way to victory.
Wright State was led offensively by Boston Smith, who went 2 for 6 with two home runs and five RBIs. Warren Hartzell got he loss for Wright State. He is 6-2.
Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 11-38 (9-18 Horizon League). Wright State falls to 32-18 (23-5 Horizon League). The 'Dons will try to win the series on Friday (May 16) when the two teams play at 3 p.m. at Mastodon Field.
