CLEVELAND - Purdue Fort Wayne softball beat Northern Kentucky 3-1 on Wednesday (May 7) to advance in the Horizon League Championship.
With the win, the Mastodons will move on to play No. 1 seed Cleveland State on Thursday (May 8) at noon.
It took Alanah Jones just 77 pitches to take care of NKU's 29 batters. She had four strikeouts, giving up five hits and one earned run. NKU did not record anything more than a single in the game. She picked up her 14th win of the season after the complete game victory.
While Jones was dealing from the circle, the Mastodon defense came up huge on a few occasions. Gwen McMenemy had a diving catch in right field to end the fourth inning and Addison Zimpleman, Tori Countryman and Kennedy Peckinpaugh turned a double play in the infield in the sixth.
Purdue Fort Wayne recorded eight hits, two of which were doubles from Grace Hollopeter and Zimpleman.
The Mastodons struck in the first inning with an RBI double from Zimpleman. The Mastodons are now 10-0 this season when they lead after the first inning.
The Norse struck back in the second with a run thanks to a hit by pitch and two singles. With the bases loaded, a fielder's choice at first put NKU on the board, but Bailey Manos limited the damage to one with a fly out to center.
Later on in the third, McMenemy and Manos singled, then Tori Countryman had a sac bunt to push them to second and third. Then, the All-League First Team selection Hollopeter singled through the left side to give the 'Dons a 2-1 lead.
In the fifth, the Mastodons got an insurance run when Hollopeter doubled, then Zimpleman singled her home.
NKU's last chance to extend the contest was thwarted by Jones' stout pitching. She struck out two Norse swinging, then after NKU got a runner on, Hollopeter caught a pop-up foul to seal the victory.
NKU fell to 22-26 and will play again on Wednesday in an elimination game. Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 19-24 and will play Cleveland State on Thursday (May 8).
