About The Big Meet
For more than 10 years, Grand Valley State has hosted its annual Big Meet – a two-day track and field meet featuring some of the most talented athletes in the country.
Each year, more than 1,000 athletes head to Allendale, Mich. for GVSU's largest event of the year. From throws to sprints and hurdles, to distance and pole vault, all NCAA events are represented across the two days.
The Big Meet, like all Grand Valley State indoor track and field meets, is hosted in the Kelly Family Sports Center. The 138,000 sq. foot Gold LEED Certified facility opened in 2008 and contains a 6 lane 300 meter indoor track with 9 sprint lanes, long jump and triple jump lanes and pits, an indoor pole vault, shot put, and high jump area, a 100-yard indoor synthetic turf field, multi-purpose rooms for various student activities, day use student locker/shower rooms, public restrooms, an Athletic Training room, concession area, bleacher seating for up to 800 spectators and field level bleacher seating for 260 student athletes.
'Dons of the Week
The 'Dons earned their first Horizon League Runner of the Week award on January 27, Sam Dunnett and Lillian Hurd swept both the men's and women's runner of the week selections. Dunnett went on to claim the following week's award on February 3, along with Ali Sparks winning Purdue Fort Wayne's first Horizon League Field Athlete of the Week award of the season. The Mastodons claimed four of the eight weekly league awards from January 27 and February 3.
Women's Last Time Out
The Purdue Fort Wayne women's track and field program won four events at Trine's Mrs. G Invitational on Friday (Feb. 6). Francesca Carlo won both the shot put and weight throw at the meet. The senior used a 15.67 meter weight throw mark to beat out the competition. The Ohio native also tossed a personal record 11.96 meter shot put attempt to win her second event of the day. Kaymin Phillips ran a personal record 8.93 60 meter hurdles time to take first in the event final. The freshman ran a 9.01 second PR in the preliminary round before breaking it again in the final. Harmony Johnson clocked a 7.70 in the 60 meter dash to finish first at Trine.
Men's Last Time Out
Purdue Fort Wayne men's track and field program took on the Mrs. G Invitational (Feb. 6). Michael Drohosky won the high jump at the meet, tying his personal record with a mark of 2.01 meters. Five Mastodon set personal records at the meet: Tristen Newsome, Jaylin Springer, Denton Jacobs, Tyler Bowman and Andrew Arnos.
#HLTF Indoor Preseason Polls
The Mastodon women's team earned 76 points in the polls, behind Youngstown State (98) and Milwaukee (90). The Penguins took eight first place votes, leaving two for the Panthers. The Mastodon men tallied 42 points in the polls. Youngstown State (63) and Milwaukee (57) owned the top of the men's preseason polls as well, the Penguins took seven of the eight first place votes.
