The Purdue Fort Wayne men’s volleyball program announced in August the hiring of Jim Palilonis as an assistant coach.
Palilonis joins head coach Ryan Perrotte’s staff after spending 16 seasons at Ball State as an assistant coach.
At Ball State, Palilonis primarily worked with setters and helped lead the offensive strategy while also serving as the lead recruiting coordinator. He also played a key role in the Cardinals 15 winning seasons, which included five 20-win seasons, and consistently achieved national rankings. One of his biggest accomplishments at Ball State was his role in the 2002 season where the Cardinals finished with a 23-8 overall record and reached the NCAA Championship game for the 15th time in program history.
In addition, Palilonis served as an assistant coach for the women’s volleyball team for two seasons. He helped the Cardinals claim the 2010 Mid-American Conference regular season title and an at-large bid into the 2011 NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
“Volleyball has been a part of my life for more than 30 years and I am thrilled to start this new chapter at Purdue Fort Wayne,” Palilonis said. “I have always had a great deal of respect for the players and coaching staff at PFW. I am eager to be a part of the Mastodon family and to contribute to the success of this great team. Coach started a 40-year legacy that I am humbled and honored to be a part of.”
Palilonis is a 1996 graduate of Ball State University with a degree in secondary education.
Palilonis was the head coach at Winchester High School from 2004-05 while serving as an alternative school teacher at the Greater Randolph Country Interlocal Cooperative. He also served as an assistant head coach for the program in 2002. Palilonis also had coaching stints with Munciana Volleyball Club and Muncie Southside High School.
While teaching and serving as the social studies department chair at Stevenson Elementary School in Chicago, Palilonis coached club, middle school and high school volleyball for both boys and girls. He coached the St. Rita Catholic High School boys’ varisty, the Stevenson Elementary School sixth through eighth grade girls, the second City Volleyball Club boys and the Maria Catholic High School girls’ varsity team,
Palilonis wife Jennifer is a George & Frances Ball Distinguished Professor and director of the Ball State University Center for Emerging Media design. Jim and Jennifer have twin and Gage and Quinn.
