Valparaiso, IN- In a game where the statistics were very similar, Valparaiso used a rebounding edge and solid foul shooting to stop IPFW, 59-45 at the Athletics Recreation Center on Monday evening.
Valpo dominated the glass, 41-28, and hit 18 of 19 freebies.
IPFW, who had shot over 80% from the line in their recent three-game winning streak, shot only 42.1% (8-19).
Both teams played very intense defense in this one.
A 3-pointer by sophomore guard Jakari Johnson gave the 'Dons an early 10-7 advantage.
The Crusaders would bounce back and go on a 16-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Jarryd Loyd, to make it 23-12 with just under four minutes left in the opening half.
A lay up by junior forward Zeljko Egeric cut the Valpo lead to 27-19 at half.
IPFW came out and cut the Crusaders' lead to just three on a bucket inside by senior forward Tyler Best.
But, a lay up by Urule Igbavboa at the 14-minute mark pushed the Valpo lead back to 11.
The 'Dons made a final run on a triple by Johnson that made the score 43-39 with just over five minutes left, but that is as close as the Mastodons would get.
Best led all scorers in the game with 15 points. Junior forward Justin Hawkins was the only other 'Don to hit for double-figures with 10.
Igbavboa led Valparaiso (9-10) with 14 points.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 7-13. The Mastodons will not return to action until February 1, when they travel to UT-Pan American to take on the Broncs.
