
IPFW Tops Toledo by 12 for First Win of Season

Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW Mastodons prevailed for the first time in the 2008-09 season, topping the Rockets of Toledy by a 72-60 score, as Jordan Zuppe went 6-of-17 from three-point range en route to a game-high 24 points.
Zuppe's 17 three-point attempts ties the school record set by Jamie Holderman against Missouri-St. Louis on February 15, 2001. The six makes puts her in a 17-way tie for the 10th highest single-game total in school history, most recently accomplished by current IPFW assistant coach Hilary O'Connell on February 10, 2005 against UW-Milwaukee.
Along with the 24 points put up by Zuppe, Chelsey Jackson scored a career-high 18, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the field including 1-of-1 from long range. Eva Ivanova added 10 as the `Dons put a trio of starters into double figures in the scoring column, with Sarah Haluska and Nanyamka Moore each chipping in seven points off of the bench.

Ivanova pulled down nine rebounds as IPFW out-rebounded Toledo 34-32, the first time this season that the `Dons have out-rebounded their opponent. Haluska added five caroms with Courtney Reed, Zuppe, Laura Gerhardt and Moore each grabbing four.
Reed dished out five assists for the second straight game, tying her career best set on Wednesday against Fairfield. Moore also dished out four assists, as Haluska had a season- and career-high five steals.
Toledo scored first in the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead before the `Dons scored the next five points to take a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest. Ahead by four at 14-10, IPFW ran off eight straight points, culminating with a long-range basket by Zuppe, to take a 12-point lead halfway through the opening period.
IPFW kept their lead despite a furious Rocket comeback, in which the visitors out-scored IPFW 12-2 late in the half, cutting the deficit to just two with 23 seconds to play before Chelsey Jackson ended the half with a jumper, sending the `Dons into the locker room with a four-point halftime lead.
The Rockets scored first to open the second half before IPFW scored five straight points, on a three-pointer by Reed and a lay-in by Haluska, to push IPFW ahead by seven. The Mastodon grew to as many as 18 following a lay-in by Ivanova with 10:04 on the game clock.
Eight straight points by Toledo followed, as the Rockets used a sharp amount of pressure defense. The visitors closed to within six points on three separate occasions, the latest with 2:44 on the clock before IPFW scored the next eight points on a pair of lay-ups by Jackson and two free throws each from Zuppe and Haluska.
Van Wert native and Toledo forward Allie Clifton cut the deficit to a dozen with 1:14 to play; however, that would be the final tallies of the game, giving IPFW the 72-60 victory.
In all, IPFW hit 11 of their 32 three-point attempts, while holding Toledo scoreless from long range at 0-for-8. IPFW also converted on 26-of-61 field goal attempts for the game, with Toledo hitting just 18 total baskets in their 42 attempts.
What kept the Rockets within striking distance was free throws, as for the second consecutive game, IPFW was grossly out-scored from the free throw line. Toledo went 24-of-31 on their free attempts, with IPFW converting on 11-of-14, as the `Dons have been out-scored by 28 points over the last two games on free throws.
IPFW forced Toledo into 23 turnovers, while committing just 17 themselves.
Naama Shafir scored 23 for Toledo, 13 of which came from the charity stripe, with Tanika Mays adding 13 and Cliffton scoring eight. Mays pulled down seven rebounds, with Jessica Williams dishing out a team-best three assists.
The `Dons now take to the road, as they play their next four games outside of the Hilliard Gates Sports Center, and the opener of the trip is to St. Bonaventure, N.Y. where they `Dons will face off against the Bonnies on December 2 starting at 7:00 PM.
The road trip continues through the weekend as IPFW opens its conference season at UMKC on Saturday, December 6 with a 5:05 tip-off and follows with a game at Southern Utah on Monday, December 8, with the tip-off slate for 9:00 PM Eastern Time.
