Fort Wayne, IN - Senior righthander Stacy Herrold saved the best for last. In his final home appearance at Mastodons Field, Herrold limited Western Illinois to just one-hit in a 2-0 win. The Leathernecks took Game 1 of the Summit League doubleheader, 10-5.
Herrold was masterful, striking out six Leathernecks while walking just three. He got all the run support he needed in the 4th inning.
Designated hitter Chris Gottschall and first baseman Shaun VanDriessche reached with consecutive singles off of WIU starter Austin Brough. They both moved over on an infield ground out. With two out, catcher Devin Taylor laced a double down the left field line scoring both.
It was the final home appearance for Herrold, Taylor, Gottschall, Mark Carden, Quentin Brown, and Tyler Baatz.
In Game 1, IPFW got a two-run homer from VanDriessche in the bottom of the first, but WIU starter Randon Lingle settled down and put up zeros in the next six innings.
The Leathernecks (12-28, 7-12) turned to first baseman Tyler Metcalf and the senior responded with a pair of home runs, a two-run shot in the 3rd inning and a three-run blast in the sixth. They were home runs 10 and 11 on the season for Metcalf.
VanDriessche and right fielder Joel Washko drove in a pair in the eighth and Washko plated one in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the 'Dons dropped the opener 10-5.
Lingle went 8.1 for the win (2-2). IPFW starter Samuel Walker took the loss (0-5). He left after an arm strain in the third inning. He was charged for three runs, one earned, in 2.1 innings. He struck out two and walked one.
With the split, IPFW improved to 10-34, 3-17 in Summit League play.
The 'Dons will finish out the season in the Dakotas with series at North and South Dakota State.
