
Imel fired a 73 to lead IPFW in first round action

KETTERING, Ohio - Sophomore Drew Imel currently sits in fifth place overall, leading a Mastodon squad that battled a tough course en route to a seventh place finish after the opening round of the 2010 Dayton Flyer Invitational.
Imel jumped out with a 35 on the opening nine holes, the lowest front-nine score in the event, and closed with a 38 on the back to record his second-best 18-hole score of the autumn season with a two-over73.
Roberto Packiornick followed as the next Mastodon to check in, as his 77 placed him in a tie for 34th place overall. Bruno Carvalho follwed one stroke and two places behind, as he fired a 78 behind nine hole scores of 41 and 37.
Tomaz Pinheiro currently sits in a tie for 48th place overall, after identical front and back-nine scores of 40 left him nine-over on the 7,055 yard, par-71 course. Junior John McMillen rounded out the IPFW lineup, firing an 83.
Senior Ryan Olbin played as an individual and closed the opening round at 9 (43-38) in a tie for 53rd place.
"Right now, NCR [Country Club] is winning," said head coach Billy King. "This is a tough course - lightning fast greens, tough pins, long. Our guys are doing a good job of staying focused out there and we're going to need to keep that up as we're moving up tomorrow."
As a team, IPFW is currently in 7th place after team total of 308 in the 13-team tournament. The 'Dons are one stroke ahead of the host Flyers and will chase a lead pack led by Evansville's opening round 292. Parker Hensley of Evansville currently shares the individual lead with IUPUI's Michael Davan.
Second round action begins tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. from NCR Country Club in Kettering.
