Cedar City, UT - With the Summit League regular season winding down, IPFW's post season tournament chances took a hit Saturday, losing a series-ending doubleheader to Southern Utah by the scores of 16-5 and 7-3 on at Thunderbird Park.
Game 1 was a schedule nine-inning affair but was stopped after seven innings due to the 10-run rule. The Thunderbirds put a five-spot on the board in the second and third innings of the opener to cruise to the win.
In Game 2, IPFW led 3-1 on the strength of a Cory Miller two-run single in the 3rd inning.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the sixth when the T-Birds put it away with six runs of their own. Three of those runs came on a three-run homer by right fielder Brock Westphal.
With the sweep, SUU improves to 16-30, 9-10 in conference play, while IPFW falls to 12-35 and 8-12 in league play.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting Butler in a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m. at Mastodon Field.
