Game 1 | Game 2
Murray, KY - After dropping the opening game of a four-game set to the IPFW Mastodons on Friday afternoon, the Murray State Racers rebounded with a doubleheader sweep of the 'Dons on Saturday by the scores of 5-3 and 9-0 at Reagan Field.
Game 1 saw the Racers jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI ground out by catcher Jacob Rhodes and an RBI double by designated hitter Brandon Eggenschwiler.
The Mastodons picked up a three-spot in the top of the 3rd inning to take the lead. Second baseman Garrett Segraves doubled home catcher Brendan Landwehr from second. That was followed by a sacrifice fly by center fielder Kurt Dudley and an RBI double down the left field line by first baseman A.J. Christensen.
But the 'Dons weren't able to hold the one-run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Murray State pushed a pair across on RBIs by Rhodes and Eggenschwiler again.
MSU (7-7) also got an insurance run in the 5th inning as left fielder Ty Stetson singled home Eggenschwiler.
Racers' starter Tyler Beers went six complete for the win (2-1). He gave up all three Mastodon runs on eight hits. He fanned five and walked two. Cameron Finch came on in the seventh to earn his second save of the year.
IPFW starter Lucas Kesterson was saddled with the loss (0-2). He gave up five runs (three earned) on six hits in 5.0 innings of work. He struck out and walked three.
Mastodon shortstop Will Faulkner and MSU's Eggenschwiler each went 3-3 in the game.
All the scoring in Game 2 came in the 3rd inning as the Racers sent 13 men to the plate. The big blows of the inning came from Stetson (two-run single) and right fielder Zach Noonan (two-run double to left center).
MSU starter Jake Donze limited IPFW to just one hit over 5.0 innings in picking up his second win of the season (2-0).
Faulkner and first baseman Zach Hufferd got the only two base hits in the ball game for IPFW.
Mastodon reliever Ryan Jensen took the loss for the 'Dons (0-1). He gave up four runs on four hits in 0.1 innings.
With the doubleheader loss, IPFW falls to 2-5. The Mastodons and Racers will conclude their weekend series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
