Box Score
Murray, KY - Murray State capitalized on a pair of IPFW mistakes in the fifth inning, scoring three runs, on the way to a 4-1 victory of the Mastodons on Sunday at Reagan Field.
The Racers (8-7) took three out of four games in the series.
MSU first baseman Jacob Rhodes got the scoring started for the Racers in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI ground out that scored shortstop Brandon Elliott from third.
IPFW starter Samuel Walker and MSU starter Bryan Babbin put zeros on the board until the 'Dons broke through in the top of the 5th inning.
Catcher Brendan Landwehr opened the inning with an infield single to second base. He would advance to second on a wild pitch and moved to third as third baseman Cory Miller singled through the right side. Landwehr would eventually score on a sacrifice line drive by right center by second baseman Garrett Segraves.
In the bottom of the fifth, Murray State catcher Clay Fusion reached on a single through the right side. Center fielder Elliot Frey then hit what looked like an inning-endng double play ball, but a Mastodon infield error left both Fusion and Frey safe at first and second. Both would advance 90-feet on a wild pitch.
After a Walker strikeout of right fielder Zach Noonan, the senior starter hit Elliott to load the bases. Second baseman Travis Isaak made IPFW pay for their mistakes with a bases-clearing double to left center field.
Neither team scored the rest of the way, making the final 4-1.
Babin evened his record at 1-1 with his 6.0 inning outing. He gave up IPFW's lone run on five hits, walking four and striking out three. Cameron Finch tossed the final three scoreless innings for his third save of the season.
Walker also saw his record move to 1-1. In 5.2 innings, he gave up four runs (just one earned) on six hits. He struck out three and issued just one free pass. Matt Ransbottom tossed 2.1 innings on shutout ball.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 2-6. The Mastodons will be off until Friday when they begin a four-game series at New Mexico State.
