Evansville, IN - The IPFW Mastodons dropped the middle game of a three-game series against Evansville on Saturday afternoon, after the Purple Aces scored one run in each of the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, erasing a 3-1 lead through five innings of the game, and win the game 4-3.
Will Faulkner went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring twice, while Nate Thomas drove in a pair, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Lucas Kesterson picked up a no-decision on the mound after pitching the first five innings, striking out seven and scattering four hits and allowing one earned run. Parker Moorman picked up the loss, pitching the sixth and seventh innings of the game, allowing three earned runs while striking out one.
The Mastodons scored quickly in the game when the 'Dons loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, and scored when Thomas was hit by a pitch, chasing home Faulkner, who hit a one-out double to start the string of batters reaching base.
IPFW tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning when Garrett Segraves scored on a wild pitch before a Thomas single to center field drove in Faulkner for the Mastodons' final run of the contest.
Evansville answered quickly with a solo home run with one out in the bottom of the third inning, before the Purple Aces bats went silent for the next two innings, with IPFW leading 3-1 after five innings.
The Purple Aces proceeded to score one run in each of the next three innings with the last run, in the eighth inning, coming on a sacrifice squeeze, provided the game-winning tally of the contest.
Relief pitcher Jake Naumann picked up the win for Evansville, pitching the final six innings of the contest, striking out four and allowing two hits, as the Purple Ace offense totaled seven hits, including two by third baseman Cody Fick.
The loss drops IPFW to 4-15 on the season while Evansville improves to 14-9 overall.
The two teams meet up again tomorrow afternoon for the series finale to be played in Evansville.
