Game 1 | Game 2
Shreveport, LA - Senior right hander Ryan August's strong recent performances earned him a spot back in the weekend rotation for the Mastodons, and on Saturday afternoon at Sheehee Stadium, he made the most of that opportunity.
August tossed a complete game six-hitter as IPFW took Game 2 of the conference doubleheader with the Centenary Gents, 10-2. The win gave the Mastodons a twinbill split as Centenary came from behind to win Game 1, 8-4.
August got plenty of run support in Game 2. IPFW jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first as designated hitter Brett Clark scored a pair on a single to short. Clark was credited with an RBI as Garrett Segraves scored. A throwing error on the play by Matt Creamer allowed Will Faulkner to score all the way from second. Clark would eventually come home on a sacrifice fly by first baseman A.J. Christensen.
IPFW blew the game wide open in the top of the 3rd inning. Center fielder Kurt Dudley singled to center field scoring Faulkner to start the barrage. Left fielder Cody Galbraith followed that up with an RBI single of his own, making it 5-0.
Right fielder Nate Thomas struck the big blow of the inning, a one-out triple down the right field line that plated Galbraith and Dudley. Catcher Caleb Fennimore finished off the scoring with an RBI single to center bringing home Thomas staking the 'Dons to an 8-0 lead.
August allowed single runs in the third and fourth (unearned), but the Mastodons got those back in the sixth and seventh for the 10-2 win.
August worked around five free passes and struck out four for his second win of the season (2-3).
Centenary starter Derek Dalzell took the loss (0-4). He gave up eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits in 2.1 innings. He struck out two.
Brett Clark went 3-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Will Faulkner was 2-3 with a pair of runs scored.
In the opener of the afternoon, the Mastodons fell behind 3-0 after the first inning, but scored four unanswered between the fourth and sixth innings to take a 4-3 lead into the seventh. But in the bottom of the seventh, Centenary (5-22, 2-9) scored five runs on five hits to push ahead, 8-4.
IPFW loaded the bases in the 9th inning, but Dalzell came on to close the door and preserve the win for CC reliever Ryan Maldonado (1-0). Maldonodo gave up just two hits of 2.1 innings.
IPFW starter Lucas Kesterson was the loser (0-5). He gave up five runs on 10 hits over 6.1 innings. He struck out six and walked three.
Clark was 3-4 in Game 1 for a six-hit afternoon.
With the split, IPFW sits at 11-22 and 6-5 in league play. The 'Dons and Gents wrap up the four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Sheehee Stadium.
