Shreveport, LA - R.J. Talamantes laced a two-out, two-run double into left center field in the bottom of the ninth inning capping a frantic eight-run comeback as the Centenary Gents took the final game of the Summit League series with IPFW, 10-9 on Easter Sunday at Sheehee Stadium.
IPFW led by the score of 9-2 going in to the bottom of the seventh inning and looked to have it on cruise control, but the Gents had other ideas.
IPFW starter Samuel Walker, who breezed through the first seven frames, walked the first three batters in the 7th inning to load the bases. Talamantes drove in a pair with a single down the right field line. That was one of just two hits in the inning, as the Mastodons committed three errors. Once the dust had cleared, Centenary had scored six times to draw to within one at 9-8.
The 'Dons failed to score in the top of the 9th inning, setting the stage for the final Gents comeback. Junior reliever Parker Moorman, who came on to get the 'Dons out of the seventh, tossed a scoreless eighth inning, but allowed a lead off single to Dan Lazarou to begin the ninth. The next batter, Mark Martinez induced a walk, giving the Gents runners on first and second with no outs.
Seth Lugo grounded out to the right side of the "Dons infield moving the runners up 90-feet. IPFW head coach Bobby Pierce played the percentages and intentionally walked Mark Gillean to load the bases with just the one out. Moorman got the next batter, Matt Creamer to pop up to short, but Talamantes would ruin the plan with the walk-off double to left center giving the Gents three of four wins on the weekend.
IPFW right fielder Steve Danielak was 3-5 in the ballgame. Left fielder Carter DeBoe was 2-4 with three RBI, while third baseman Will Faulkner went 2-4 with two RBI.
Moorman was tagged with the loss. He tossed 2.0 innings, giving up two runs on three hits.
Derek Dalzell got the win by pitching a scoreless ninth. In the series, he made three appearances, getting a win, loss and a save.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 11-23 and 6-6 in Summit League play. The 'Dons are off until a weekend series at Oral Roberts on Friday evening in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
