Fort Wayne, IN - Freshman shortstop Kristian Gayday hit his first collegiate home run, but it was the only offense IPFW could muster against Butler on Tuesday afternoon at Mastodons Field. The Bulldogs edged the 'Dons, 3-1 in the 2011 home finale.
The Mastodons will now finish the season on the road with four games at North Dakota State and four games at South Dakota State, beginning this weekend.
Butler (19-23) opened the scoring in the top of the second as shortstop Jack Krause plated Mike Hoscheit with a sacrifice fly.
The Bulldogs added a single tally in the 4th inning on an RBI double down the right field line by Zach Sizemore.
The Mastodons would cut the lead in half with Gayday's two-out blast over the left field wall, making it 2-1 BU.
Butler added an insurance run in the 8th inning on an RBI single to left by catcher Nick Hladek.
IPFW and Butler had chances to add to their totals, but stranded 10 runs each in the game.
The Mastodons did get a look at the future in this non-conference game as head coach Bobby Pierce gave a number of freshman the start. Left fielder Malcolm White was 2-4 and center fielder Justin Scott and first baseman Zach Hufferd each had strong defensive efforts in the field.
BU reliever Joel Leichty earned the win with 2.0 solid innings of relief. He gave up just one hit, while striking out four.
IPFW starter Steve Danielak was tagged with the loss (0-1). He went 4.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits. He fanned three and walked two.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 13-30.
