Fargo, ND - IPFW senior left hander Nick Opitz tossed a six-hit shutout to lead the Mastodons to a 3-0 series opening win at North Dakota State on Friday afternoon in Fargo, North Dakota.
It was Opitz' sixth complete game of the season and moved the 'Dons to 14-30 overall and 9-12 in Summit League play.
Opitz got all the offensive support he would need in the 2nd inning. Shortstop Kristian Gayday laced a one-out triple to the gap in right-center. He would eventually come home on a wild pitch by NDSU starter Colby Tognetti.
With two out in the inning, second baseman Garrett Segraves drew a walk. He would advance to second on a single by third baseman Will Faulkner and come around to score on an RBI single by designated hitter Brett Clark.
The score remained 2-0 until the 7th inning when the 'Dons added an insurance run. Left fielder Cody Galbraith led off the frame with a single to right and would eventually score on an RBI single by catcher Cory Miller.
Opitz was in total command the entire game. He fanned six and didn't allow a walk while improving to 4-7 on the year.
Will Faulkner led a 12-hit IPFW offensive attack by going 4-4. Segraves and Miller each went 2-4.
Tognetti (3-5) took the loss for NDSU (17-26, 11-9, SL). He gave up two runs on nine hits in 7.0 innings of work. He struck out eight and walked two.
The series continues on Saturday afternoon at Newman Outdoor Field.
