Pitching Woes Lead to 11-4 Loss at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – IPFW recorded 10 hits compared to just six from Butler yet the Bulldogs took advantage of scoring opportunities which led to the 11-4 win. Malcolm White led the 'Dons in a losing effort. He went 3-for-4 from the plate.
IPFW put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Clay Hathaway took first base after a walk. He moved into scoring position after a wild pitch. Carter DeBoe also drew a walk in the first inning. Both DeBoe and Hathaway advanced on a single from Malcolm White. Kristian Gayday sent Hathaway home by grounding out to the shortstop.
Daniel Tursell struggled on the mound early for IPFW. Tursell walked the first three batters of the game loading the bases. Haddad flied out to centerfield but the sacrifice fly would tie the ballgame.
Michael Mugg made the game 2-1 after scoring off a Jordan Hoeing plate appearance. Mugg reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second and third base off wild pitches. Hoeing made contact and sent the ball to the left side of the diamond which allowed Mugg to score the go ahead run.
The 'Dons pushed the lead to 3-1 in the fifth inning, but pitching woes led to Butler scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning putting the score at 5-3. The Bulldogs generated five runs off just two hits. Four runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the bottom of seven sealed the win for Butler.
Four different players were on the mound for IPFW on Sunday. Daniel Tursell got the start and went for a full four innings. He didn't allow a hit, but he walked eight batters which led to one earned run. IPFW issued 17 walks and hit three batters which led to Butler runs.
The 'Dons will return to action next weekend with a three-game series against the Ohio Bobcats.
