
Mastodons Comeback to Defeat Ohio 6-4

ATHENS, Ohio -- The IPFW baseball team scored four runs in the top of the ninth to complete the 6-4 comeback victory over the Ohio Bobcats. Steve Danielak picked up the win on the mound. Danielak limited Ohio to just three hits throughout the final three innings.
A trio of Mastodons recorded three hits against the Bobcats. Malcolm White led the way with a 3-for-4 performance. He scored a run and recorded two RBI. Shane Trevino and Clay Hathaway also ended the day with three hits.
Business picked up for the 'Dons in the top of the ninth inning. Hathaway and Boss each drew a walk to get the momentum started. Carter DeBoe delivered a single through the right side of the infield for IPFW after a pitching change. Boss advanced to second which took Hathaway to third.
Malcolm White hit a two RBI single through the left side that sent Hathaway and Boss to the plate. DeBoe kept the pressure on by stealing third base. White moved into scoring position after a pop fly from Kristian Gayday, which put Shane Trevino at the plate with two runners in scoring position. He came up with the play of the day with a two RBI single back up the middle of play giving IPFW the go ahead runs.
IPFW improved to 4-10 on the year with the victory. Charles Weaver got the start on the mound for IPFW. He threw six solid innings and struck out five. Danielak earned his first win of the season throwing the final three innings. He struck out four and didn't walk any batters.
Ohio got off to a fast start as they took a 1-0 lead after the bottom of the first inning. Newton led off with a single to left field. He stole second and advanced to third after an at bat from Streich. Painter doubled down the left field line sending Newton home.
The Bobcats added two more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Gaertner hit a two RBI double to right field scoring both Madsen and Cozart.
IPFW cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth. The 'Dons loaded the bases early in the inning after getting base hits from Gayday, Trevino and Cody O'Neal. Fenimore pushed the first IPFW run across the plate, but it was a win for the defense as he hit into a double play. A Hathaway single through the left scored Trevino as Boss ended the inning with a groundout to third base.
The Bobcats put one more run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dean singled to the left side of the infield to lead off the inning. He moved into scoring position after Charles Weaver hit Cozart. Gaertner came up with the clutch hit of the inning as his single to right field allowed Dean to score. The single run in the sixth would be the last run of the game for Ohio as IPFW would come roaring back to take the win. These two teams will face off again tomorrow in a doubleheader.
