GAME ONE BOX | GAME TWO BOX
INDIANAPOLIS - The IPFW Mastodons bounced back from a series-ending loss to the Oakland Grizzlies to take a pair of games from the Butler Bulldogs on Monday afternoon by scores of 4-1 and 3-1.
In the opener, the Mastodons never trailed, and added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh innings in the 4-1 win, while taking the lead for good in the fifth inning of game two in the two-run victory.
Mackenzie Ritsema and Ashleigh Bousquet each went 2-for-4 for IPFW in the opener, with Bousquet scoring twice, as Larissa Franklin and Ritsema each scored once. Four different players: Courtney Cronin, Stephanie Beuther, Cassie Wolfe, and Kayti Hanson, each drove in a run in the win.
Cronin picked up the win in the circle, striking out five and giving up six hits and an unearned run, while Miranda Kramer picked up a one-batter save by getting the game's last out.
The teams traded zeros on the scoreboard for the first three innings of the game before IPFW scored first when Cronin hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Ritsema. Beuther followed with a double to left-center field, driving home the eventual game-winning run in Ashleigh Bousquet.
Butler cut the gap in half in the bottom of the fifth inning with a run, before a Hanson bases-loaded walk in the sixth, and a Wolfe single in the seventh added some insurance for the Mastodons.
The Bulldogs threatened in the bottom of the seventh, earning a trio of walks to load the bases with two outs, before Kramer came in and struck out the only batter she faced in picking up her first collegiate save.
In the afternoon finale, the Mastodons got back-to-back hits from Ritsema and Franklin to open the game, before the pair completed a double steal, with the throw attempt to third base evading the Butler third baseman, allowing Ritsema to score and give IPFW a 1-0 lead.
Butler knotted the score with a run in the fourth inning, and IPFW answered right away with two runs in the top of the fifth when Kayti Hanson converted a sacrifice squeeze play at the plate, allowing pinch runner Jessica Haskins to score, before Franklin hit an RBI single to score Brittany Kachur.
The Bulldogs would be unable to mount a late rally, as relief pitcher Kramer closed the door for her second save of the day. Ritsema and Franklin were each 2-for-4 for IPFW, while Kachur was 2-for-3. Megan Flenniken pitched the games' first five innings, scattering four hits and striking out four, while improving to 5-2 on the season.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday, March 21, when the squad plays host to the Falcons of Bowling Green starting at 3 p.m. at the IPFW Softball Field.
