
Mastodons Prepare for Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IPFW will join Eastern Illinois and Evansville this weekend to play in the Dunn Hospitality Diamond Classic. The Mastodons will play a doubleheader on Friday, March 2. Game one against Evansville will begin at 11 a.m. while game two will be played at 3 p.m. against Eastern Illinois. The weekend will end with a game between IPFW and Evansville on Saturday, March 3.

SCOUTING THE PURPLE ACES
Trailing 3-2, Evansville came from behind to score six runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to a 9-5 victory over the University of Tennessee Martin Skyhawks Wednesday night.
Sophomore Ryan Billo started and tossed 4.1 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, six hits, while striking out three. Earning the win, senior Zach Taylor (1-1) came out of the bullpen to throw 1.2 frames, giving up two runs, two hits, a walk, and struck out two, while Naumann hurled two scoreless inning, allowing just two hits and struck out 4-of-9 batters faced. Biggs made his third appearance as a closer this season, tossing a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout.
Evansville was led offensively by junior Jason Hockemeyer who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Also contributing in the win was sophomore David Patton, going 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while junior Andy Lasher went 1-for-5, knocked two runs in, and scored one. Seven players recorded hits and tallied runs in the victory.
Evansville took the initial lead in the first inning when Eric Stamets led off with a double to left field and scored on Chris Pearson's groundout, but the Skyhawks matched UE in the bottom half with an unearned run.
UE took the lead again in the fifth when Tim Bodine reached on an error, stole two bases, and scored on another error. However, UT Martin answered back again in the bottom of the inning, stringing together a double and two singles for two runs, taking a 3-2 advantage.
The tables turned in the sixth, as the Aces batted around the order sparked by Hockemeyer's leadoff double to left field. Evansville scored their first run of the frame after Jake Mahon was hit by a pitch, Kevin Kaczmarski singled to load the bases, and Patton walked, bringing home Hockemeyer. With one out, Stamets' sac fly to left plated another run, and Lasher kept the rally going with his two-out double down the left field line, scoring two. The inning continued as Pearson walked to put runners on first and second, and freshman Kyle Pollock knocked home Lasher on a single to center. Up again, Hockemeyer recorded his second hit of the frame with a single to left field plating the sixth run of the inning, giving UE an 8-3 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Matt Haynes' two-run home run, made it 8-5, but Evansville held off the Skyhawks the rest of the way and tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth to secure the win.
Left-handed pitcher Cole Isom is scheduled to make the start against IPFW on Friday. The Purple Aces will then go to right-handed Kyle Lloyd on Saturday.
Jason Hockemeyer has started in five games for the Purple Aces and leads the team with a batting average of .412. He has two doubles and a triple early in the 2012 season. Also contributing to the Evansville offense is Eric Stamets and Andy Lasher. Stamets has started every game and hits .333 while Lasher enters the game with a .286 batting average.
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Eastern Illinois recently upset No. 14 Louisville on the road to earn their second win of the season. Their other victory came in the season opener against Mississippi Valley State. The win at Louisville marks the first time Eastern Illinois has knocked off a nationally ranked opponent since the 2009 season. They scored two runs in the top of the fourth inning and made the score 3-0 in the top of the sixth. Louisville rallied back in the bottom of the ninth, but EIU's Keith Koser came in to earn his first career save giving the Panthers the 3-2 win.
Jacob Reese has the highest batting average on the team for Eastern Illinois. Reese is hitting .333 (7-for-21) with a double and two RBI's. Ryan Dineen, Caleb Howell and David Ciaglia all share a part of the team lead in RBI's with three. Ciaglia also has the lone home run of the season for the Panthers.
Christian Slazinik and Troy Barton have each recorded wins on the mound for Eastern Illinois. Slazinik is scheduled to throw against the 'Dons on Friday. He is 1-1 on the year with an ERA of 5.40.

The Mastodons are 2-4 overall early in the 2012 season. Malcolm White is off to a hot start for IPFW as he leads the team with a .333 batting average. Carter DeBoe, Clay Hathaway and Daren Boss are also contributing on a daily basis. DeBoe leads the team in RBI's with six. Hathaway is the team leader in runs scored with six and Boss, the lone senior on the roster, is hitting .278 with one double and four RBIs.
The Mastodons will use the pitching trio of Charles Weaver, Jason Kalber, and Travis Reboulet this weekend. Weaver (0-1) has thrown 12 innings so far this season and is second on the team with nine strikeouts. He holds an ERA of 4.50 while limiting the opposition to a .234 batting average.
Jason Kalber is a perfect 2-0 on the mound this year for IPFW. He is also the team leader in strikeouts with 15. Reboulet will finish off the weekend with a pitching matchup against Evansville. Reboulet has the lowest ERA on the team at 1.04. He has five strikeouts in just over eight innings of work.
