Mastodons Prepare for Three-Game Series vs. Michigan

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- IPFW will face the Michigan Wolverines this weekend in a three-game series beginning on Friday afternoon. The non-conference weekend tilt serves as the home opener for the Wolverines at Ray Fisher Stadium.

SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
Michigan enters the weekend series against IPFW with an overall record of 9-11. Four Wolverines have started in all 20 contests in 2012. Those players are Michael O'Neill, Will Drake, Patrick Biondi and Coley Crank. O'Neill holds the highest batting average on the team at .363 (29-for-80). He has a team-high nine doubles to go with a triple and six home runs. He leads the club in RBI with 17 and in total bases with 58. Drake is second on the team with a batting average of .329. He has six doubles and a team-high three triples this season.
Two Wolverines have reached double digit steal totals. O'Neill has swiped 10 bags on 11 attempts and Biondi has advanced safely 12 times in his 17 attempts.
IPFW will face the top three pitchers in the Michigan rotation this weekend. Ben Ballantine has the lowest ERA on the team at 1.87. He is projected to start on the mound during Friday's contest. Ballantine leads the team with 22 strikeouts. He has thrown a team-high 33.2 innings on the year and has only allowed seven earned runs.
Brandon Sinnery will get the nod in game two of the series. Sinnery has an ERA of 5.52 entering Saturday. He is 0-2 on the year, but has 14 strikeouts in 31 innings of work. The weekend will end with Bobby Brosnahan on the hill. Brosnahan's ERA stands at 2.54. He is 2-2 early in the 2012 season with 15 strikeouts. Brosnahan has good control on the mound, walking only four batters in 28.1 innings.
Michigan faced three BIG EAST schools to start the year as part of the Big Ten / BIG EAST Challenge. They lost the season opener 9-8 to Pittsburgh, but bounced back with wins over Seton Hall and West Virginia.
The Wolverines have also played in three tournaments this spring. They went 1-3 in the Snowbird Invitational with back-to-back losses to Xavier. They also dropped three of four at the LSU Tournament as they were swept by LSU, but managed to split two games against Notre Dame. Their most recent tournament was played in South Carolina. Michigan swept Coastal Carolina, but suffered setbacks against UAB and Connecticut.
