ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 2012 IPFW baseball team did something on Friday night that no other team in school history had done before. They beat the Michigan Wolverines. Daren Boss, Clay Hathaway, and Carter DeBoe all hit two-run home runs and Charles Weaver threw 8.1 innings for IPFW as the Mastodons earned an 8-6 victory at Michigan.
The Mastodons surrendered four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning after leading for much of the game. The four-run inning pushed the contest into extra innings. Each team scored one run in the 10th, but a two-run home run from DeBoe gave IPFW the 8-6 victory.
Charles Weaver took the mound for IPFW in the Michigan home opener. He ended the game with nine strikeouts, while limiting the Wolverines to just six hits. Weaver also picked off two base runners on Friday afternoon.
Daren Boss gave IPFW an early 2-0 advantage with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning. Lucas Salerno walked as the first batter of the inning and he advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt from Clay Hathaway. Boss watched a first pitch strike come across the plate and then drilled his first home run of the season off Ben Ballantine to give the Mastodons the lead.
The Mastodons got another two-run home run in the top of the fifth as Clay Hathaway took a pitch deep to right center putting the game at 4-0. Caleb Fenimore singled through the left side of the infield to lead off the inning. A sacrifice bunt from Salerno put Fenimore on second and then Hathaway increased the lead with his first home run of the season.
Fenimore pushed the lead to 5-0 with an RBI single in the top of the sixth. Kristian Gayday got hit by a pitch to reach first base for the 'Dons. Steve Danielak followed in the lineup with a base hit moving Gayday all the way around to third. Danielak was thrown out trying to advance to second, but it worked out in the end as Gayday scored the fifth run of the game for IPFW on the Fenimore single.
The Wolverines got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Will Drake got the ball rolling with a leadoff triple to right center field. Michael O'Neill earned an RBI with a deep fly ball to left field. The sacrifice fly allowed Drake to cross home plate making the score 5-1 in favor of IPFW.
Michigan scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 5-5. Steve Danielak entered the game for IPFW out of the bullpen. He took the mound with the bases loaded and walked in the first run of the inning. Drake hit a two RBI single to left center field for the Wolverines, and O'Neill singled to left field for another Wolverine RBI which tied the game.
Fenimore hit an RBI single in the top of the 10th which scored Shane Trevino, but the Wolverines would answer in the bottom of the inning with a run of their own. Lorenz tripled for Michigan with one out and a Delaney single would send the game to the 11th. DeBoe's third home run of the season would end up being the game-winner as the 'Dons improve to 5-14 on the season.
Danielak earned his second win of the season against Michigan. He came in to throw the final 2.2 innings, helping IPFW hold on for the win. Danielak struck out four batters and held the Wolverines to just two earned runs.
The Mastodons will play Michigan again tomorrow, March 24, at 1:05 p.m.
