ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The IPFW baseball team was defeated by the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 4-2. The Mastodons scored one run in the top of the ninth, but the comeback would fall short giving the Wolverines their first home win of the year.
The Michigan Wolverines scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth to earn the win on Saturday. IPFW cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the fifth, but the Wolverines would pick up their 10th win of the year by limiting the 'Dons to just one hit.
Two base hits and an IPFW fielding error gave Michigan a quick 2-0 lead after the first inning. The lead was cut to 2-1 when Steve Danielak scored an unearned run off an at bat from Lucas Salerno. IPFW scored their first run of the game without recording a hit in the fifth inning.
IPFW's only hit of the game came in the top of the seventh inning. Kristian Gayday led off the inning with a single to right field. Salerno walked after a Caleb Fenimore fly out putting Gayday on second base. A wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position, but a fly ball to centerfield would end the inning with two left on base.
Michigan kept IPFW alive with a rough top of the ninth. Danielak walked with one out and reached second base on a wild pitch. Caleb Fenimore joined Danielak on base after a throwing error and the bases were then loaded as Salerno was hit by a pitch. The 'Dons scored one run off a Clay Hathaway groundout, but the comeback would fall short as a pop fly to centerfield would end the ballgame.
Jason Kalber got the start on the mound for IPFW. He threw six complete innings and struck out three batters. Kalber allowed two earned runs off seven hits. He only walked one batter. Kevin Kimball and Kyle Sorensen also saw action on Saturday. Kimball walked four batters which resulted in one run, yet he didn't allow any hits. Sorensen closed out the game for the Mastodons. He threw the final 1.2 innings.
