IPFW Defeats SDSU, 4-0, in Conference Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team opened Summit League action with a 4-0 win after downing South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon in Fort Wayne, Ind., at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club.
The win improved the Mastodons to 7-8 overall (1-0 SL) while Jackrabbits fall to 4-11 overall (0-2 SL).
In doubles action, the 'Dons picked up wins at Nos. 3 and 2, respectively.
The IPFW tandem of Andres Cobos and Junya Saruta took down SDSU's Dominic Rossetto and Morgan Salo, 8-3, at the No. 3 position.
However, the Jackrabbits bounced back at the No. 1 spot when James Thorp and Parker Lawley earned an 8-7 (5) win over the Mastodon pair of Roberto Cabrini and Connor Andrews to give each team a doubles win.
With the doubles point on the line, Joao Freitas and Daniel Kang battled SDSU's Justin Pyle and Alejandro Marion to an 8-6 win at the No. 2 slot for the 1-0 Mastodon lead.
In singles action, IPFW didn't drop a match and earned victories at Nos. 4, 1 and 2, respectively.
In dominating fashion, Andrews played the No. 4 slot where he won by a 6-2, 6-3 count over Thorp.
Cabrini had a close first set at the No. 1 position, but won 6-4, followed by a 6-1 win against Pyle.
At No. 2, Kang sealed the team win for the Mastodons after he defeated Rossetto, 6-4, 6-3.
The Mastodon netters will return to action tomorrow when they take on Western Illinois at 9 a.m. (EST). Weather permitting, the match will be played on the campus of IPFW at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center.
