Mastodons Down Leathernecks, 6-1, for Summit League Weekend Sweep

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team is off to a perfect start of 2-0 in Summit League action after closing out the weekend with a 6-1 win over Western Illinois on Sunday at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The win against the Leathernecks is the first ever for the men's tennis program. The 'Dons now improve to 8-8 on the dual season while the Leathernecks drop to 2-8 (0-1 SL).

IPFW started the day off in a sweep over WIU in doubles play with wins at Nos. 3, 2 and 1, respectively.

The Mastodon pair of Andres Cobos and Junya Saruta had a quick 8-1 win at the No. 3 slot, while Daniel Kang and Joao Freitas followed up with an 8-5 win at No. 2 to seal the doubles point for IPFW. The tandem of Roberto Cabrini and Connor Andrews battled the No. 1 position but came out on top with a 8-7 (6) win.

IPFW kept the momentum up and dominated singles action against WIU to earn wins in five of the six matches.

Freitas claimed the first win in singles at the No. 5 position by a 6-1, 6-0 count, while Martin Muadi was right behind with a perfect win at the No. 6 slot, 6-0, 6-0.

Andrews clinched the win for IPFW at the No. 4 spot after downing his opponent, 6-1, 6-0.

At the No. 3 position, Cobos won 6-2, 6-1, while Cabrini battled the first set at the No. 1 position to a 7-5 win followed by a 6-1 win in the second set.

The Mastodon netters will return to the courts on Saturday (March 31) when they host Oral Roberts at 3 p.m.
